Thanks for that Masked Marauder, so they do check the tyre pressure, in that case, i am going to lower the pressure of one tyre, and see if they inflate it.

can anyone else think of anything?

Get Grease and Oil on your seats, and miss the fact that the water pump has failed, even though they renewed the coolant.

I wonder how many items just get ticked off without a check?

well, when you look at these "check lists", it looks as though they've gone down the list in one go, just ticking them off.

i took the galaxy into ATS a short while ago, i asked for new oil, oil filter, and asked them to check the battery, and auto box. i watched them do the whole "mini service" and all they did was change the oil and filter, he did not even remove the cover, to even check the battery, yet, when you pay, the documents say it was checked, and was "ok".

and my local ford dealer are crap, thats why i tried to get it in else where, but the garages i tried, wouldn't do it.

and as far as i could tell, they hadn't done anything with the auto box.

in this service they should check the auto box fluid, so im expecting my auto box to go bang shortly after they've messed with it :(

get it done get the paperwork for your service history, then do it properly yourself its your car you so when you work on it you do your best to make sure its done properly otherwise it ends up costing you money,

I have had my car worked on by others and got it back with screws/bolts missing from undertray, battery cover, oily rag tucked between pipes under bonnet.

I am just glad i found this forum and am getting to know the workings of my tdi well enouh to be able to start doing work on it myself

4-year service will be the minor one. Basically an oil change and if you're lucky they will do the pollen filter too (they should change it). If you want to go away from the main dealer find an independent VW specialist. Personally I use Nationwide Autocentres (formerly Lex) although I get the impression that they are now trying to tout for extra work by pointing out things that don't really need doing. At the last major service they did on mine, they even told me that 2 of the wheels were out of balance. They don't change the pollen filter but they do a better job than the main dealer and I know that at least they take all the wheels off.

Your dealer should check all tyres for condition and pressure as part of the service.

well, its a knock-out!

they were supposed to service it, fix anything that needed fixing, and then MOT it!

so, they MOT'ed it 1st, and it FAILED!

then they serviced it, and found:

the rear right hand indicator bulb - the paint had come off - new bulb

oh, forgot to say, i have had to leave it with them till tomorrow afternoon, so they can get all this work done!

i don't know yet, the costs haven't been drawn up on a proper bill yet, i am expecting it to go up a bit more before they've finished.

the good thing is, the mechanic did show me around the car, and showed me all the bits that need replacing, so at least i could see that they did need replacing. but i was suspicious of the drop link though, as i could hear the knocking.

Will report back tomorrow.

well, its all working brilliantly now.

I've been looking around, and can see all the new bits, and feel/hear the difference in the drive quality.

oh, also, they have not greased the battery, door hinges, and did not pump the tyres up. and they couldn't of checked the doors, as the rear left one, is as bad as ever, you really have to slam it, to get it to shut!, and really pull it to open it!

Bloody crap they are!

and the interior smells of smokers!

I used the dealer to do the main service on my car, and it ended up costing me a small fortune. Would never let them loose on it again.

DIY is the way forward. i have had a few different cars and have to say the MK2 Gal is one of the easiest to DIY service in my opinion.

Repairs can be a little more complex but armed with the right tools TIS,Elsawin,ETKA and VAG-COM a lot of things are relatively easy

Guess what...

Bristol street (ford squealer) phoned me up today, and said to bring it back in, as it needs a new exhaust.

I said, but why was it not mentioned before? and why is it ticked "ok" on the check lists?

he just said the rear box needs replacing, and it would be
